Necking, beading, and bulging in soft elastic cylinders

چکیده

Due to surface tension, a beading instability takes place in long enough fluid column that results the breakup of and formation smaller packets with same overall volume but area. Similarly, soft elastic cylinder under axial stretching can develop an if tension is large enough. This occurs when force reaches maximum fixed or force. However, unlike situation fluids where develops finite wavelength, for hyperelastic solid subjected combined action stretching, linear bifurcation analysis predicts critical wavelength infinite. We show, both theoretically numerically, localized solution bifurcate sub-critically from uniform solution, character resulting depends on loading path. For stretch variable corresponds bulge depression, necking, depending whether greater than certain threshold value dependent material model equal 23 neo-Hookean. At this single value, solutions cease exist becomes exceptionally supercritical. either force, depression bulge, respectively. explain why diagrams previous numerical experimental studies look as were supercritical although it was not meant to. Our shows solids are fundamentally different. Fluid Plateau–Rayleigh follows whereas general subcritical akin phase transition.

Stability and bifurcation of in ° ation of elastic cylinders

A method of obtaining a full (two-dimensional) nonlinear stability analysis of inhomogeneous deformations of arbitrary incompressible hyperelastic materials is presented. The analysis that we develop replaces the second variation condition expressed as an integral involving two arbitrary perturbations, with an equivalent (third-order) system of ordinary di¬erential equations. The positive-de n...

Helical packings and phase transformations of soft spheres in cylinders.

The phase behavior of helical packings of thermoresponsive microspheres inside glass capillaries is studied as a function of the volume fraction. Stable packings with long-range orientational order appear to evolve abruptly to disordered states as the particle volume fraction is reduced, consistent with recent hard-sphere simulations. We quantify this transition using correlations and susceptib...

Elastic actions exchanged by eccentric cylinders in liquid crystals.

Equilibria of a nematic liquid crystal confined between two eccentric cylinders are studied within a purely director approach. A planar equilibrium configuration competes against a three-dimensional one. A stability diagram is obtained in terms of both the ratio between the radii of the bounding cylinders and the distance between their axes. It turns out that the nonplanar minimizer has a struc...

Transient Network at Large Deformations: Elastic–Plastic Transition and Necking Instability

We theoretically investigate the mechanical response of a transient network, which is characterised by dynamically breaking and re-forming crosslinks, and accounts for the finite chain extensibility (thus permitting the large deformations to be described). We build the general theory that incorporates the widely accepted empirical model of hyper-elasticity at large deformations (the Gent model)...

Impact burial of cylinders in soft marine sediments

This paper presents results of experimental deployment of a large instrumented cylinder of variable nose geometry and center of mass offset. Data on three tests series in the Gulf of Mexico are presented and analyzed statistically. The stochastic nature of the problem of the cylinder free-falling through water is outlined and described as an input to the current impact burial prediction package...
